Grammar Teacher

I don’t feel comfortable with my English Grammar so lately I have gone back to SMC College again. My grammar teacher comes from Poland and speaks with a very heavy Polish accent. She is very funny and chattered on gaily enough in the class. I enjoy watching her talking but I do not enjoy her teaching.

One day she told us that she had a friend who came from Poland and lived with her for a while. The night before her friend had to go back to Poland, before they went to sleep, they worried that they might oversleep and miss the air-plane; with her polish accent she said to her friend, “If you get up earlier you call me, if I get up earlier I call you.” I felt her English pattern was very funny, and I said to her, “If you get up the same time, who will call who?” the whole class laughed but she was really mad because she thought I was mocking her English with Polish accents.

In the class she loves to say, “ When I was young I love to read.” and “When I am home I love to read” I know she just wants us to benefit from the reading. One day she asked us to use ‘WHEN’ to make sentence. I said that when I die I want to die like my grandmother who dies peacefully in her sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in a car crash. She didn’t like my sentence. She thinks I shouldn’t talk about dying. One of the students told her that she should let us say whatever we want. She said to him, “Don’t ‘should’ me.”

One thing I am very amazed at is that she is very capable with her toe. Sometimes, she sits on the table, her left hand holding the book, her right hand tapping her left knee, and her left leg shaking with shoe trapped on her toe. It is fascinating that her shoe never falls off. In the afternoon it is boiling hot and I am positively melting so that I nearly fall asleep in class, but whenever I see her toe my sleepiness is gone.
